Chapter 9: Lake Water Quality

9.2 Little Pelican Lake

Fig 9.1 Little Pelican Lake depth

9.2.1 Water Clarity

Secchi disk measurements have been taken on Little Pelican since 1997 by a volunteer that lives on Little Pelican Lake and by RMB Environmental Laboratory staff. These measurements are taken each year between May and September. Little Pelican Lake has an average Secchi depth of 8.7 feet.

9.2.2 Chlorophyll A

Water samples have been collected on Little Pelican Lake and analyzed for chlorophyll-a concentration from 2003-2011. Chlorophyll-a is a measurement of algal concentration (how "green" the water is). The average chlorophyll-a for Little Pelican is 8.8 ppb.

see Chlorophyll-a data graphs

9.2.3 Total Phosphorous

Water samples have been collected on Little Pelican Lake and analyzed for total phosphorus from 2003-2011. The average total phosphorus for Little Pelican is 22.4 ppb.

see Total Phosphorus data graphs

9.2.4 Trophic State Index

Average TSI ratings are based on TSI values for ChlA, TP, and Secchi disk. The Little Pelican Lake average TSI is 48.2, which is mesotrophic, but near the eutrophic range. Little Pelican Lake has the highest TSI of all the Pelican Group of Lakes due to the Pelican River discharging into it.
