Chapter 8: Impacting Streams and Rivers | ||||||||||||

Comparison of all 4 sites in the Spring Creek Watershed Spring Creek is sampled at the Cormorant Lake outlet, Ida Lake outlet, Culvert at 15823 Sherbrooke, and the Inlet. The Cormorant and Ida outlets are recent man-made dams. The dams are used to control the water level of the lakes. This has introduced new water into spring creek. Sampling at the Sherbrooke culvert did not begin until 8/28/2002. Most of the stream is encompassed by wetlands. The comparison graphs below show that Spring Creek flow and nutrient concentrations are similar at the Sherbrooke culverts and the inlet to Pelican Lake. The Ida Lake Outlet and Cormorant Lake Outlet are intermittant in flow and contribute very little to phosphorus loading and total suspended solids loading. Phosphorus The Ida Lake Outlet and Cormorant Lake Outlet make up a very small portion of the total phosphorus (TP) loading.
Total Suspended Solids Total suspended solids (TSS) are highest at the Sherbrooke culverts. This result is most likely due to the rapids-like nature of that area. The fast moving water and sharp curves cut away at the stream bank causing erosion to occur.
Flow The flow at the Spring Creek inlet and the Sherbrooke culverts is similar. The Ida Outlet and Cormorant outlet only flow intermittantly.
